Dear Parent,

Math and its world of absolutes can be intimidating to students, and even parents. With some, it even carries a reputation as one of the most hated subjects. As a core skill, it’s also one of the most crucial.

Some of this intimidation can center around changes in math language. We now hear of regrouping with addition and subtraction, instead of carrying and borrowing. In division, we’re distributing things evenly. The latest math language can leave parents at a loss when a student starts to ask questions. Our tutors know today’s terms and are equipped to help children to both grasp them and use them. Children are looking for continuity in math. They want to know how all the parts are connected to one another– how they fit together.

While many tutoring services start with an assessment test, A+ takes a different approach that we believe makes students more comfortable, which leads to greater achievement, overall. Our tutors help students cope with and manage their classroom work and assignments, and, ultimately, their time.

It’s very helpful to break down the workload into manageable chunks so students aren’t overwhelmed by the homework. Then, a time for the work is assigned and, step-by-step, we start to see improvement.

We may use a timer to let the student who is working on a math problem know when three minutes have expired. If the problem isn’t done, it’s probably time for the student to start asking questions. This time management can save a lot of frustration, and keep a student motivated to complete a group of math problems in a set period of time.

Of course, the details are really at the center of our efforts. Students also need to learn to ask the right questions of themselves to get to the correct answer. “What is a reasonable answer? And, what can I do to get closer to the answer?” Ultimately, the student learns to take responsibility for learning, and is then better equipped to take on the challenges that lie ahead. With skill mastery comes more responsibility. This paves a path toward academic success that students can travel upon. Our tutors thoroughly enjoy the supplemental role they play, and the hopes for a child’s future that they help inspire. We would be honored to work with you to help your child succeed.

Sincerely,
